Statement
"I’m attracted to the subtle changes buildings undergo as they pass through the hands of successive generations. My focus has been on the largely unseen, non-descript commercial and industrial structures that make up a significant portion of the built environment.

I began using photographs as a source for my paintings in 1993 in an attempt to gain some emotional distance from my subject matter, to lessen the number of subjective and sometimes arbitrary decisions I make while painting.

I paint with watered-down acrylic paint in transparent glazes on smooth-surfaced water-colour paper using a limited palette of two reds, two blues, yellow and black. I strive to objectively represent the visual information of the photo within the constraints of my chosen palette and technique.

I feel that this more objective approach, combined with the rigour of the process, allows the viewer of my work to interpret the painting without any overt manipulation or expectation on my part.

It fascinates me that this apparently emotionless process can so ably distill the underlying psychology of my choices as an artist."
